
“The progress of women over recent decades has been extraordinary,” write researchers at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School in a much-discussed new study.
“The gender wage gap has partly closed,” they continue. “[Women’s] educational attainment has risen and is now surpassing that of men; women have gained an unprecedented level of control over fertility; technological change in the form of new domestic appliances has freed women from domestic drudgery; and women’s freedoms within both the family and market sphere have expanded.”
No news here, you may say. We all know that women’s opportunities have grown exponentially in the last 40 years, as stereotypes of every kind have been tossed in the cultural dumpster.
But wait. Read on:
“Yet … measures of subjective well-being indicate that women’s happiness has declined both absolutely and relative to men. The paradox of women’s declining relative well-being … is pervasive across demographic groups and industrialized countries.”
Pundits are scratching their heads over the new Wharton study, called “The Paradox of Declining Female Happiness.” Its message about women’s growing misery is especially startling because in the 1970s, the “happiness” gender gap ran the other way — with women consistently reporting being more satisfied with their lives than men, the authors say.
Why this flip-flop on happiness by the most fortunate generation of women in history? Why have progress and liberation on every front — educational, professional and sexual — left many women in a funk?
Old-guard feminists have a party-line explanation: the “second shift.” That’s the idea that women bear a double burden because as they moved into the paid workforce, they still had to do the lion’s share of the work at home.
Sorry, the data don’t bear this out, according to the Wharton study. Since 1965, it says, men and women have experienced relatively equal declines in total hours worked. Women are working more hours in the market but significantly fewer at home, while men are working fewer hours in the market and more at home.
What does seem certain is that the path to liberation and expanded opportunity has entailed some unsettling tradeoffs.
Take the sexual revolution. In 1970, women on my college campus began sporting T-shirts declaring that “A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle.” In their eyes, marriage and family were a ball and chain — more likely to bring women bondage than fulfillment. To find happiness and an authentic identity, they insisted, women would have to cast off social convention and obligations to others and “explore” their sexuality without restraint.
But this philosophy had a catch: men began to embrace it too. Encouraged by women, many men began to back away from the responsibilities and burdens of marriage and fatherhood and to join enthusiastically in the sexual free-for-all. Increasingly, they came to view women as sex objects — the very thing feminists had claimed to want to avoid — rather than as long-term partners in the common enterprise of family.
We know what followed: Marriage and family began to unravel. The divorce rate doubled between the mid-1960s and mid-1970s. Today, no one of either sex can count on marriage or family for the social support we need to get through life’s inevitable challenges. But women and children — more vulnerable — have paid the biggest price.
Women’s quest for happiness in the work world also brought tradeoffs. In the 1970s and ’80s, many women, long shut out from high-powered careers, confidently sought freedom and fulfillment from a shiny briefcase and a VP nameplate on the office door. Success brought financial self-sufficiency and a fuller stage for the use of talents.
But the search for identity in the work world also brought disappointment. As women pinned their hopes for happiness on professional careers, they began to discover the mixed bag their male counterparts knew too well: the pressure to produce, the outright drudgery, the risk of failure, the boss from hell. For some, the process may have shed light on why men have traditionally died at a younger age.
Maybe we women got the whole happiness thing backwards. Years ago, we assured ourselves of a golden road ahead if we could throw off all that had tied us down and limited our options in the past. But perhaps there was something in those ties themselves — those “prisons” of family, marriage and other fundamental obligations — that had the power to bring us closer to our true goal.
What hath the misbegotten liberation movement wrought?

“EACH YEAR, FAMILY FRAGMENTATION costs American taxpayers at least $112 billion dollars. These costs are recurring—that is, they are incurred each and every year—meaning that the decline of marriage costs American taxpayers more than $1 trillion dollars over a decade. These costs are due to increased taxpayer expenditures for antipoverty, criminal justice and school nutrition programs, and through lower levels of taxes paid by individuals whose adult productivity has been negatively influenced by growing up in poverty caused by family fragmentation. This figure represents a minimum or “lower-bound” estimate. If, as research suggests is likely, marriage has additional economic and social benefits to children, adults, and communities—benefits that reduce the need for government services and that operate through mechanisms other than increased income—then the actual taxpayer costs of the retreat from marriage are likely much higher.”
Didaskalos, the answer is obvious: a constitutional amendment banning divorce! As a legally single person, I can’t wait to vote for it — especially because it won’t apply to me, nor will my life change so much as a molecule because of it!

I mean, since you are apparently the voice for women everywhere…and, it’s kind of ironic and rather hypocritical that you are preaching the destructiveness of women’s liberation via your very public, paid job as a newspaper columnist; a job you would not have if were not for the women’s movement. You will, I hope, forgive a long quotation. This is from an essay “The Emancipation of Domesticity” in the book What’s Wrong With the World” by G. K. Chesterton, published in 1910.

Chesterton also refered to modern woman as the great amateur for giving up rule of the home to play second fiddle in a world of men. (my paraphrasing)

But one word leaped off the page in Katherines article. That word is ‘identity’. Without one we are lost. With the wrong one we are confused.

I have a theory that if every woman with little kids, who wanted to stay home with them, just up and walked out of the work force, it would make such a labor shortage that employers would have to raise wages (because workers could pick and choose), and one income would once again provide for a family.
I have asked a few of the women I know who have small children, and they all have said that if they could manage it, they wouldn’t work. (I grant you this is only anecdotal evidence.)
FC, interesting theory about the workplace. Would you include fathers who wish to stay at home and raise their kids, thereby allowing women you don’t honor motherhood at the sole role they should honor? I liked Chesterton’s message, but I wonder what dangers we would create if we enforced this belief. Margaret Atwood wrote about the potential dystopia of praising women’s role as mothers (or at least their capacity to bear children) as their sole worth in The Handmaid’s Tale (I know it should be italicized, but I don’t know how and don’t want to mess with the HTML code).
What concerns me most about KK’s article - aside from her continued use of fallacious logic, in this case, the either-or and hasty generality - is that she ignores the role of the father as a caregiver. She implies that the change in the traditional paradigm (whatever one she imagines it to be) has made women unhappy but doesn’t deal with fathers who have now taken a more active role in raising their children, nurturing them instead of being the distant, working disciplinarian. I can’t wait to be a father, and I would jump at the chance to make that my primary responsibility. I just need heath care as my husband’s job does not provide it for me.

3- Ban on women dealing with male shopkeepers.
4- Ban on women being treated by male doctors.
5- Ban on women studying at schools, universities or any other educational institution. (Taliban have converted girls’ schools into religious seminaries.)
6- Requirement that women wear a long veil (Burqa), which covers them from head to toe.
7- Whipping, beating and verbal abuse of women not clothed in accordance with Taliban rules, or of women unaccompanied by a mahram.
8- Whipping of women in public for having non-covered ankles.
9- Public stoning of women accused of having sex outside marriage. (A number of lovers are stoned to death under this rule).
10- Ban on the use of cosmetics. (Many women with painted nails have had fingers cut off).
11- Ban on women talking or shaking hands with non-mahram males.
12- Ban on women laughing loudly. (No stranger should hear a woman’s voice).
13- Ban on women wearing high heel shoes, which would produce sound while walking. (A man must not hear a woman’s footsteps.)
14- Ban on women riding in a taxi without a mahram.
15- Ban on women’s presence in radio, television or public gatherings of any kind.
16- Ban on women playing sports or entering a sport center or club.
17- Ban on women riding bicycles or motorcycles, even with their mahrams.
18- Ban on women’s wearing brightly colored clothes. In Taliban terms, these are “sexually attracting colors.”
19- Ban on women gathering for festive occasions such as the Eids, or for any recreational purpose.
20- Ban on women washing clothes next to rivers or in a public place.
21- Modification of all place names including the word “women.” For example, “women’s garden” has been renamed “spring garden”.
22- Ban on women appearing on the balconies of their apartments or houses.
23- Compulsory painting of all windows, so women can not be seen from outside their homes.
24- Ban on male tailors taking women’s measurements or sewing women’s clothes.
25- Ban on female public baths.
26- Ban on males and females traveling on the same bus. Public buses have now been designated “males only” (or “females only”).
27- Ban on flared (wide) pant-legs, even under a burqa.
28- Ban on the photographing or filming of women.
29- Ban on women’s pictures printed in newspapers and books, or hung on the walls of houses and shops.
Apart from the above restrictions on women, the Taliban has:
- Banned listening to music, not only for women but men as well.
- Banned the watching of movies, television and videos, for everyone.
- Banned celebrating the traditional new year (Nowroz) on March 21. The Taliban has proclaimed the holiday un-Islamic.
- Disavowed Labor Day (May 1st), because it is deemed a “communist” holiday.
- Ordered that all people with non-Islamic names change them to Islamic ones.
- Forced haircuts upon Afghan youth.
- Ordered that men wear Islamic clothes and a cap.
- Ordered that men not shave or trim their beards, which should grow long enough to protrude from a fist clasped at the point of the chin.
- Ordered that all people attend prayers in mosques five times daily.
- Banned the keeping of pigeons and playing with the birds, describing it as un-Islamic. The violators will be imprisoned and the birds shall be killed. The kite flying has also been stopped.
- Ordered all onlookers, while encouraging the sportsmen, to chant Allah-o-Akbar (God is great) and refrain from clapping.
- Ban on certain games including kite flying which is “un-Islamic” according to Taliban.
- Anyone who carries objectionable literature will be executed.
- Anyone who converts from Islam to any other religion will be executed.
- All boy students must wear turbans. They say “No turban, no education”.
- Non-Muslim minorities must distinct badge or stitch a yellow cloth onto their dress to be differentiated from the majority Muslim population. Just like what did Nazis with Jews.
- Banned the use of the internet by both ordinary Afghans and foreigners.

Sure, why not? I’ve seen families where it works well that way, especially when the wife has greater earning potential then the husband and both husband and wife like the arrangement.

Why enforce it, or even try? Families are going to make what arrangements they want for income and child-rearing, and I don’t see it as my business — much less any government’s business! — to dictate to them what they should do (except of course in extreme cases of neglect or abuse).

Just on what you’ve said here, I would tend to agree. A woman’s worth is far more than her ability to bear, nurse, and nurture children. I’m convinced in my old age that women think differently than we men do, and I’ve learned that my sisters, women friends and neighbors, for instance, will often have an idea on a situation that I never would have thought of; and many times the woman’s idea will work better than mine. That’s only one example of why I cherish the ladies in my life — sisters, friends, neighbors.
My wife’s reaction to Katherine’s column as we sat and read the Sunday paper yesterday was,

My recipe for campfire coffee was, you take your metal coffee pot, fill near the top with cold water, and float the coffee grounds on top. Put the pot on the fire and just as soon as it comes to a boil and the grounds roll under, pull it off the fire and knock on the side of the pot to help the grounds settle out. I bet if I made some in my back yard tomorrow morning it would taste fairly terrible. Yet 4 days out in the BWCA on a chilly morning with mist on the water as the sun rises, that’s a damn fine cup a joe.
I think our tangent about Into the Wild boy has some relevance to Katherine’s topic, really.
I don’t think it would make Women in general happier to go back to the good old pre 1960’s days of being undereducated stay-at-home moms who would face an enormous social stigma if they tried to divorce abusive husbands. The issue of modern ennui goes deeper than that.
Since our primate ancestors mutated and grew big brains and became human, we spent maybe 1,990,000 years trekking around in the wilderness as migratory nomad hunter-gatherers and maybe 10,000 years developing highly complex societies where we’re rooted to one spot and the things we do to survive are an abstraction from actual survival.
What do you think we’re wired to be happier doing?

Greg, that was the guy who moved in with the neighbor gal after she and her lesbian partner had a domestic, and the one who threatened to shoot the horses had to leave. I didn’t see it, but one of my neighbors saw this guy (large Adam’s apple) mowing the lawn in high heel’s and a blue dress using a push mover.

What I’m well aware of is that you are fond of dressing in women’s clothing.
I’m not able to cut/paste from FC’s comment up above, but I think working mothers that are married HAVE to work because they have become accustomed to a lifestyle that needs their income in order to make ends meet.
Most families have two vehicles, a really nice house (big mortgage), toys they cannot live without, vacation plans they think they need and to have all these things both partners need to be working.
This is coming from a person that lived in a one income, one vehicle household (drove partner to work on days I needed the car), a modest dwelling, no toys, and non-existant vacations when I was married.
My kids learned to live without a lot of frills.
Today, kids need a computer (even little ones are on a computer now), a Blackberry, some kind of hand held game, instant food to go into the microwave to eat for supper. There’s more I’m sure.

I’ve seen this quasi-traditional trio a couple times called Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band. They consist of Mr. Peyton (not really an ordained minister, I think) who plays old vintage resonator guitars really aggressively, his brother on drums who pounds out a relentless boom-chick boom-chick beat, and Peyton’s wife on washboard. Her eyes roll back into her head while she plays, like she’s possessed.
Every guy should be so lucky to have a wife like that.

In my family it was called a washboard, and that was all my mom had for the first year or so after we moved into the N Mpls house in 1947; first washer was a wringer washer, and we had the “WPA” cement tubs in the basement. I used to help with the washing, and had to watch out for the wringer.
Anyway, my grandmom (the Czech one, not the Irish one) graduated from Anoka High in ‘05 (that’s 1905) and became a country schoolteacher until 1911. My mom graduated from Edison in 1931, went to business college for one or two years, and was an independent career woman (in St. Paul, Milwaukee, and Washington DC) until she left the work force in 1942 to be delivered of my older brother. Of us six, all have been to college, five have bachelors, four — including all three sisters — have masters, and two of my nieces have doctorates. I kind of think that in my family the whole thing of women’s lib was irrelevant, because it was just sort of taken for granted that my sisters could do anything they wanted, and the only limit was their own ambition and ability (and they all have plenty of ability, I can tell you!)
Incidentally, I was taught to do “women’s” chores around the house: wash dishes, scrub floors, iron, sew. I objected to sewing: “Maaaaa, this is sissy girl stuff!” - “Be quiet. Someday you’ll thank me.” I do. I can’t make a garment anymore, but I still do my own mending.

It was a little too close to our own career arc too, except we didn’t manufacture vinyl.
I too remember getting bathed in an old cement laundry tub. It always seemed a lot more fun than the regular bathtub upstairs.
Early childhood was happy for me.
My Mom was a schoolteacher prior to having me, basically put my Dad through law school. She had always wanted to be a nurse but unfortunately had followed the misguidance of idiot high school guidance counselors of the era who thought that girls should be steered toward home ec classes instead of math and science. Got discouraged at how far behind she was on nursing pre-reqs when she got to the U and went into education instead. Was a good teacher but quit that to become a full-time Mom. I have no doubt that I benefitted from having my Mom care for me full time before I went to 1st Grade. Proabably wouldn’t know how to sing if she hadn’t.
Now here’s where I get really tired, though, of Katherine’s constant carping about the importance of the nuclear family and narcicisstic Baby Boomers getting divorced for selfish reasons. By the time I was in high school my Dad had downspiraled psychologically and f-ed up his law practice and the family’s economic situation. He and my Mom couldn’t have a conversation any more without it ending in a bad fight and it was a foregone concolusion that they were heading for violence eventually in spite all of the couseling they attempted. Although they came of age in the Sixties, neither of them were hedonists or drug users and the birth control pills were about family planning not promiscuity. The divorce when it came was not about selfish people wanting to live self-serving pleasurable lives as Katherine always inveighs but rather about making the home a suitable environment for kids to be in. Mom re-entered the workforce out of necessity not feminist ideology and she had to start over at the bottom in middle age and build a new career from a menial clerical job and she did fairly damn well at in the end. Dad eventually got his sh!t straightened out about 85% of the way but he really really had to go when he left our house.
Katherine should give her pat self-righteous assessment of her neighbors’ behavior a rest already.

Mr dubble, I can understand when it is best if one parent leaves the home. Your parents did the right thing.
In my case I was left by my parents at an aunt’s house. When I returned to my parent’s home, both of them had moved out. I stayed in the porch of the abandoned house for a couple weeks. Then I returned to my aunt’s home and she had also moved. I don’t think she was really my aunt. I think she owed my mother money, or my mother was blackmailing her. My point is when people leave, sometimes it’s for the best.
Anyway it all worked out great, because that is when I joined the carnival. I was 14, but I said I was 18. They didn’t care. I stammered and stuttered, and they thought I was an imbecile. I was just what they needed.
My first job was packing the gears and bearings of the old ferris wheel. You had to reach in with your arm and a handful of grease when the gears began to smoke. This had to be done while the ferris wheel was running, because as my boss said, “the show must go on”. It was very dangerous, and only an imbecile would attempt to do such a thing.
The guy who had my job before me lost his right arm in the gears. He might have been a real imbecile. They felt sorry for him. They gave him a job on the midway selling helium filled balloons after the accident. It didn’t work out. The same thing always happened when he tried to make change.

That has happened more than you realize Greg, but far too often, houses given to them for free are trashed, and things like the wiring and plumbing,etc. are ripped out of the homes and sold as scrap. Taxpayers have been very generous Greg, but we get crapped on from certain groups of people.
We also have allowed Indians to net Walleye’s all they want under our treaties, despite the fact that the treaties are one sided, and Indian’s can use all of the White Man’s technology to deplete fish supplies. I went ice fishing on Mille Lac’s last December and got skunked like all the other fisherman I talked to there, simply because the lake is over netted.

Lot’s of young and single people aren’t willing to pay the high cost of health insurance and simply pay out of pocket like I did a few years back. Obama penalizing people thousands of dollars for not buying health insurance is going to cause a major backlash.
I think anyone who gets fined would vote against the politician who voted to fine him. Paying that fine would have a large and memorable impact on anyone. I think it would become a single issue type of thing. If poor working people can’t buy food, or pay for shoes for there children because of a big fine, they won’t forget it.
This could be the silver lining to this deep dark cloud. Toss the vile, stenching rats out of office when you go to the ballot box. Of course they will be replaced by more rats, but it still would be fun to toss them out.

Winter may be on the warm side, NOAA says
The coming winter stands a good chance of being warmer than normal in Minnesota and much of the northern U.S., according to a long-range outlook issued today by the U.S. Climate Prediction Center.
The outlook was non-committal on precipitation, though, meaning chances are about the same for anything from a brown Christmas to snowmobile bliss.
The forecast is for the months of December, January and February, known as meteorological winter. Trends are based heavily on recent trends in ocean temperatures in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of South America, known as the El Niño-La Niña oscillation, long known to affect weather around the globe.
Temperatures have been increasing in the eastern equatorial Pacific, indicating a mild El Niño for this winter. On average, El Niños have brought warmer winters to the Upper Midwest, but average precipitation.

I don’t see any reason to fine people for not being insured. I think it would be pretty simple if there was a public option that you’re enrolled in automatically if you can’t provide a certificate of insurance at the time you file your taxes. What some of the insured folks aginst govt healt insurance don’t seem to understand is that they are already paying for the people who are uninsured. The way health providers are set up today, it would be like if gas station operators had to let everyone fill their tanks whether they could pay or not. Suppose only 2/3 of the people actually pay for their gas and the rest are freeloading. Think the gas station wouldn’t have to charge more per gallon to stay in business?

I had insurance, but business has been way down in my industry. I’ve been looking most everyday for other work. I had to choose between my apartment, my car (I need this for the type of work I do) food, or health insurance.

I was listening to Chris Baker on KTLK this morning, and he had some guy from England on the show giving us a preview of what government run healthcare will be like. He said his 59 year old father worked hard all his life, to the point where the cartledge in his knees is gone, he’s in great pain, and doctors tell him he needs both knees replaced. The problem is, government rationers won’t do it yet because he’s TOO YOUNG!. They figure he will need them replaced again someday, so they want to wait until he is old enough to get by with one set of replacement knees.

He said that one of the left’s arguments is “Jesus loves all people”. Yes, this is true, but much like when your child acts up, you love them but don’t approve of their behavior. Another of the left’s positions for pushing gay marriage was “People who wrote the Bible didn’t really know much about homosexuality”. This is completely false, and it occured back then probably as often as it does today.
He also said that some of these liberal churches would read quotes from Virginia Wolf and put sage on the alter to ward off evil spirits instead of teaching from the Bible.
It sounds like the ELCA’s decision is causing problems for them with not only churches in the US like mine which is considering severing ties, but churches all around the world have already broken off relationships.

Last time I was in Amsterdam they had just outlawed smoking tobacco in public places. Their financials were for sh:t and after this ’secret’ meeting the blood was in the water. No, I think what happened was a lot of people abusing a flaw in the system trying to dump shares they couldn’t get and knew the two stocks wouldnt be as high as ever again. This wasnt coordinated.
When legitimate shorting happens on huge levels you can actually end up sending a stock in the totally opposite direction like what happened with Volkswagen last year.
People were shorting the stock on huge volumes and when it came time to return the shares they borrowed and sold, there werent enough around because Porsche swooped in an bought them all up and wasnt selling. It sent the stock through the roof when all the shorts scrambled to find shares to cover themselves. VW ended up the highest capitalized corporation in the world for a few days.

That effectively ended Bear’s chances of pulling a VW. They sold for two bucks a share.
The main point of the Rolling Stone article is there was nothing legimate about the shorting of Bear and Lehman. Yes, they had loads of toxic assets on their books-everybody did at that time. That ain’t what brought ‘em down.

What you’re describing is the ‘naked’ short selling. Thats ‘illegal’. In a legitimate short sale, you acutally have the shares you’re selling.
The shorts provide a service to the market by exposing weak companies. They act as a break on the bull market when the fundemenatals of a company point to weakness or mismanagement.
Like if you were going to jump on the wave of some stock and you looked at the short positions it would give you a reason to look further into the books of a company to see if they were cooked. Everyone else would be riding the wave but the large short position might clue you in that something isnt right.

Shorting a stock is borrowing it and selling it at its current price because you think it will go down in the future. The contract is the shares must be returned at a certain time. Between when they are borrowed and sold and when they are returned, if the stock price drops, you can buy them back at a lower price to return to the owner. You pocket the difference between what you sold the borrowed shares for and what you bought them at to return to the owner.
Short selling and options are two different things.

Its entirely possible that the market took one look at the shape Bear Sterns was in and the fact that the govt was looking for a buyer for it that they knew the stock was going to tank. They all went out in a rush to short the stock at the same time and no one could make delivery because of the limited number of shares available.The huge volumes from the market makers abusing the system meant the shares plumeted and the guys who actually had shares early on and sold at $30 made out like badits on a realtively small investment of $1.7 million. Chump change for a hedge fund. It was a classic run and the brokers got in on it by lending shares they couldnt get ahold of effectively making everyone who tried to short it a ‘naked’ short. Hardly a conspiracy. More like classic Wall Street greed and shoddy regualtion.

The difference is in a legit short, I go to you and borrow your shares to sell them to Downtown Dan for $30. I actually take possesion of those shares and Dan actually gets his new shares from me for $30. Then the price goes down and all kinds of people are looking to sell their shares. I buy them back at $2 and return them to you. I pocket the $28 per share minus interest on the loaned shares and fees. You get your shares back. Bam, done deal. Totally legit and legal.
Now, naked short selling is I go to Dan and sell him shares I dont actually have and promise to deliver at a later date. I tell him the shares are with you DAR but you dont have them either but you say you do and can get them for me to make delivery to Dan later. You dont really care because you want the interest on the loan and the fees and assume you’ll be able to find the shares later like always. If you cant find them and I cant make delivery to Dan, Ive naked shorted. If I start selling millions of shares to Dan the price will plumet on huge volumes. If tons of people do this, selling shares they dont have because they think they can find them later or never really intend to, just to drive the price down, someone, a legit short with a real position will make a killing if he sold his borrowed shares before the ‘naked’ shorts hit the market and depressed the stock price.

What? Lehman’s collapse is what started the death spiral. Bear’s fire sale put it on the edge. Without TARP the banking system, money and stock markets would have come to a complete hault.
If Dan is saying Paulsen being an ex GS exec sank Bear and then Lehamn to get rid of his competition just so he could slide back into the board room after his stint at the UST, he did so in a manner that would have destroyed our economy had TARP not eventually saved it. Good point. I stand corrected. As far as the bear-raids go, however, the motive was profit. Wall Street had been playing with fire for a long time. And, as everyone knew, the government couldn’t allow the whole system to come tumbling down. It looked like a pretty safe bet, especially, as Dan says, you’ve got some of your boys on the inside.

I’ve been to Liutsen for a couple of weddings. Stay in the condos they just up the shore from the main lodge but it’s worth it to have a meal in their dining room.

I’m also just pointing out what the consequences of pumping these amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere are. This is basic physics 101 stuff. Admittedly we’re talking about small temperature changes (which can of course be made to look all the smaller if we break it into per square foot of planetary surface, or whatever makes you feel better), but these small changes can (and are) have large impacts, some of which might not be reversible. That’s not Sky is Falling, but… how much of the planet’s population relies on glacial runoff for their clean water? Any issues with that going on around the world right now? How about the US Southwest? Certainly this will be a serious problem before rising ocean levels will affect coastal populations (of which the majority of the planet’s population resides?).

Remember a few days back when I mentioned that I cut the end of my finger off while carving apples for canning.
I just got home from a trip to the emergencey (layed off, no insurance). My finger got infected after I cleaned the chicken coop and goat shed. I enjoy a little banter now and then. The banter always reappears after any serious discussion about a topic has run its course – especially when there is a long time between columns, as is the case here. Perhaps I am here as well for other reasons which I feel no need to share with you and your ilk.
