The media misses “dear leader’s” real lesson plan
September 12th, 2009 – 10:59 PMThe mainstream media seem dumbfounded that any thinking person could object to President Obama’s speech to schoolchildren on Sept. 8. The president simply told kids to work hard and stay in school, right?
The controversy is just more proof, the media seem to have concluded, that Obama’s critics are kooks and yahoos — you know, the sort of foaming-at-the-mouth folks who show up for tea parties or town hall meetings, or seem compelled to lie reflexively about Obama’s health care reform proposals.
Why are the mainstream media so clueless about the anger and disillusionment growing among independents and conservatives?
The controversy over Obama’s education speech provides a clue. Contrary to most news reports, objections didn’t center on the speech itself. The fracas erupted over the accompanying lesson plans, or “menu of classroom activities,” assembled by the White House and the federal Department of Education.
One particularly blatant proposed activity did get some press — an assignment instructing kids to “write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president.” But the White House dropped that after a public outcry, so what’s the big deal?
Here’s the problem: The letter was only one of many examples of Obama-worship in the lesson plans, whose tone and focus came straight from the “Dear Leader” playbook. The plans included few references to citizenship and responsibility. Instead, suggested classroom activities revolved around Obama himself — his thoughts, his desires, his admonitions, the lessons we can all learn from this great man.
For example, the lesson plan for prekindergarten through grade six suggests that teachers prepare young children for Obama’s speech not by discussing personal responsibility, but by studying Obama himself. Teachers can “build background knowledge about the President … and his speech by reading books about presidents and Barack Obama.”
And for the higher grade levels? Teachers can prepare them for the “historic” speech by decorating classrooms with the great leader’s sayings: “Teachers may post in large print around the classroom notable quotes excerpted from President Obama’s speeches on education.”
Cringe-inducing Obama-centrism of this kind pervades the lesson plans. Questions and assignments take for granted that students will be inspired and moved by Obama’s words, and will want to do what he asks of them.
Students in the lower grade levels, for example, are to ponder questions such as these: “What is the president trying to tell me?” “What do you think the president wants us to do?” “Is he asking anything of anyone else? Teachers? … Parents? The American people?”
Questions for the higher grade levels include these: “Why does President Obama want to speak with us today?” “How will he inspire us?” “How will he challenge us?” The plans suggest that students reflect reverentially on the Obama quotes hung around the classroom, asking: “What are our interpretations of these excerpts?” “Based on these excerpts, what can we infer that the president believes is important in order to be educationally successful?”
This reverential tone is reinforced by the lesson plans’ odd fixation on noting the president’s exact words.
Young students, for example, may “record important parts of the speech where the president is asking them to do something,” writing down “key … phrases.” Older students may try to “capture direct quotations.” “Teachers could focus students on quotations that either propose a specific challenge to them or that inspire them in some meaningful way.” Examples: “What resonated with you from President Obama’s speech? … What are the three most important words in the speech?”
In 1991, the Washington Post went ballistic when President George H.W. Bush gave a speech to schoolchildren about working hard and staying in school. “The White House turned a Northwest Washington junior high classroom into a television studio and its students into props,” the Post fumed. Democratic leaders expressed outrage and hauled administration officials before a hearing to probe the cost and legality of Bush’s action.
In 2009, however, the media cheered Obama’s school speech. Why? The chattering classes have fallen hard for Obama’s cult of personality. Newsweek Editor Evan Thomas may have spoken for many when he breathlessly said of Obama in an interview that “he’s the teacher” and “he’s sort of God.”
Today, average Americans are beginning to see something in Obama the mainstream media can’t. That’s a narcissism — a messianic quality — deeply at odds with the American spirit. Many members of the president’s own party seem to be sensing the same. They are backing away from Obama as the real content of the “hope” and “change” he promised becomes clear.

Even though Obama was forced to alter his speech, I’m glad that many schools chose not to show it to students. Children should once again start learning about our Founding Fathers and the Constition instead of worshipping America’s first Soci@list President. The liberal indoctrination going on in our public schools needs to stop.

Obama was forced to tone down his speech to our school children after people figured out what he was up to. It’s sad the America has such a radical soci@list President today that we can’t trust him around our kids, but his close associations with other radicals kind of says it all. His buddies include terrorist Bill Ayers who bombed the Pentagon and to this day wishes he would have done more damage, anti-American racist Jeremiah “God Damn America” Wright, “Czars” Obama chose including an admitted radical communist who says 9-11 was an inside job done by Bush, and an anti-Second Amentment activist who wants to ban the American tradition of hunting. The list goes on and on. Is there any wonder parents don’t trust Obama around our kids Greg?
I think we have far too many nutcases not taking their meds and quite frankly have NO business parenting. The lies and paranoia are driven by nothing but sorry losers who didn’t get their way.
I don’t agree with everything this President is doing but he’s at least attempting to try to do things that are good for everyone and regardless of how the lunacy pac tries to twist it, his intent is good and that’s gotta count for something.
I’m proud of this country and being American, but am embarrased seeing the nutcases who lead this country with lies, distortions, and paranoia.

Maybe you like the direction this country is headed under Obama and his acomplises in the modern day democrat soci@list party, but a large and rapidly growing number of people are seeing the dangers of their soci@list vision for America and are speaking out, such as with the Tea Party in Washington D.C. yesterday with about 2 Million Patriots in attendance.
Childish behavior by both sides of the extremist movement is what will destroy this country.
As a teacher, I had no intention of showing the speech and didn’t know about it until I received orders NOT to show the speech. It was the first day, and there is already too much to cover.
However, some of the questions and assignments did not strike me as “Obama-worship.” When KK says, “This reverential tone is reinforced by the lesson plans’ odd fixation on noting the president’s exact words.” It is nothing more than asking the students to find evidence from a text. The questions asking them to infer Obama’s intent and the main idea of his speech are the exact same skills needed for the MCA Reading test. Regardless of the text, these skills and the questions are the same.
What I can understand from critics of the speech is the “What resonated” question. It implies that the speech will resonate with all listeners. Finding the main idea and determining Obama’s key points are not dangerous. Being asked to believe the speech, however well intentioned, could be.
What I will note is that the people I know who are anti-Obama do strike me as a bit nutty. I didn’t vote for him, but I don’t feel he needs to be impeached or that he’s anti-American, or part of some conspiracy. I believe he is an inexperienced leader who is trying to make something happen, for better or worse.

My daughter is a teacher (5th grade) as well in North Carolina and they chose not to show Obama’s altered speech. Good for them!

Not only is the “lesson plan” of the Department of Education (another giant federal sinecure) sycophantic, it’s also illegal. 20 U.S. Code 3403 - Sec. 3403: “The establishment of the Department of Education shall not increase the authority of the Federal Government over education or diminish the responsibility for education which is reserved to the States and the local school systems and other instrumentalities of the States. (b) Curriculum, administration, and personnel; library resources No provision of a program administered by the Secretary or by any other officer of the Department shall be construed to authorize the Secretary or any such officer to exercise any direction, supervision, or control over the curriculum, program of instruction, administration, or personnel of any educational institution, school, or school system, over any accrediting agency or association, or over the selection or content of library resources, textbooks, or other instructional materials by any educational institution or school system, except to the extent authorized by law. . .”
The NEA, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democrat Party, fell over itself gushing effusive praise for Obama’s speech. When GHW Bush spoke to the kids, the NEA wasn’t exactly enthusiastic; it denounced the speech, saying it “cannot endorse a president who spends $26,000 of taxpayers’ money on a staged media event at Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington, D.C.– while cutting school lunch funds for our neediest youngsters.”

Unions are designed so that people can’t think for themselves bdan! I worked for a food distributing place a few years back, working only two weekends a month as a part time job, but had to pay the same union dues as someone working 60 hours/week. I couldn’t afford the dues and had to quit, which was what the union wanted all along.

We can’t blame Katherine for not posting more if she’s only paid (I assume) for one post a week. Every other day would be good enough, maybe, but there is another dimension you are neglecting to mention: latency.
In the last month, the most timely Sunday column she’s turned in was the one about Woodstock… timely in that she was writing within less than a week of the anniversary of something that happened 40 years ago.
But then she had to write about town halls, in the 3rd week of August, after everyone had been writing for two weeks about the craziness at town halls.
Then she had to write about college hookup culture. This one was on time in a sense, school was starting, but who hasn’t thought again about it? Kids are gonna do it. Some folks object. Very old topic.
Then it’s all about Ted Kennedy, a full week after everyone else has said what they were gonna say about Kennedy. You beat her to the punch by six days on her own blog.

ive decided to start my political carreer and get a position in the obama admin.

I guess when even the Congress controlled by the democrat party (except for radical leftists Keith Hakim Ellison and Comradiss Betty McCollum) votes against these morons, they are in HOT WATER. Looks like now it’s even being considered to close their doors and freeze their assets.
Maybe now people will understand how ACORN goon Mark Ritchie could turn a Coleman victory into a phoney Franken win with his extemely flawed “recount”
