Does Obama really want to give his big speech from a “miniature Greek temple”?

August 27th, 2008 – 3:05 PM

Am I missing something, or is there a public relations disaster brewing for Obama with his Thursday night acceptance speech at Denver’s Invesco football stadium?

Obama has been criticized for staging rock-star-type rallies that have presented him as a messianic prophet. (I blogged about this earlier in an entry entitled “America discovers the fifth Beatle.”) This trend reached a crescendo with his massive, outdoor rally in Berlin, which John McCain later ridiculed in an ad comparing his opponent to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton.

Obama’s apparent “messianic complex” may be a factor in tightening presidential polls. In response, his aides have worked feverishly to reposition him as the candidate who can connect with common folks.

Now, it appears that Republican operatives may have infiltrated the planning process for Obama’s Thursday night acceptance speech at the DNC. Reuters reports that Obama will deliver his football stadium speech “from an elaborate columned stage resembling a miniature Greek temple.” The stage is “similar to structures used for rock concerts,” and Obama “will stride out to a raised platform to a podium that can be raised from beneath the floor.”

Rock concert staging? Podiums that rise from under the floor? Speaking from a “Greek temple”? Karl Rove could not have concocted worse symbolism for the “common man” message that Obama is attempting to send to American voters.

In the modern media age, political operatives pour time and money into planning every detail of their party’s national convention. Through careful stage management, they hope to avert unexpected developments that could lead to disaster.

It would be astounding if the centerpiece of the DNC – Obama’s acceptance speech—became just such a PR disaster.

When he ascends to his glorious stage and surveys his worshipful subjects, Obama, as did the conquering generals of ancient Rome, should seriously consider having a lowly underling whispering in his ear, “Sic transit gloria.”

Not sure you have to “reposition” yourself when 20,000 “common folks” show up to an impromptu public appearance.

Given that most of the official buildings in Washington DC are modeled after Greek temples, maybe the staging is not so outlandish.

It would be funny though if there’s an error of scale in setpiece construction a la This is Spinal Tap and when Obama walks out on stage the colonnade is only shin high.

I bet the Republican infiltrators were deliberaately fed misinformation to flush them out.

Obama will really be on his knees in the front row with a sponge and bucket, washing conventioneers’ feet.

When republicans are “infiltrating” Obama’s acceptance speech digs, it’s pretty clear the party is paranoid about it’s future. As for leland8, what point are you trying to make? Are you calling Obama gay like the Bushies called McCain gay in ‘00? Is that an insult? Seems pretty immature and McLame.

This from Politico’s Ben Smith:
Barack Obama’s appearance in Denver won’t be the first convention speech framed by Greek columns.

Republicans who are mocking Obama’s appearance haven’t mentioned it, but George W. Bush accepted his own nomination in 2004 on a set with a similar neoclassical theme, with columns rising on either side of him, as the pictures above and below show.

Indeed, the Bush set and the Obama sets currently look strikingly similar, with the podium set well in front of the columns, and connected by a path.

The attachment to kitsch, particularly at political conventions, is clearly bipartisan. (There are also a couple of columns in America, as Matthew Yglesias notes.)

Actually, the “celebrity thing” is that normally you would expect a resume in politics longer than half a page for someone running for President of the United States.

A Messianic Prophet?
Who labelled him that? Oh, yes, it was Ms. Kersten, in the second graph. And then she goes on to quote herself the third graph in order to prop up her lame argument. And of course she takes a slam at Obama for being popular in Europe. (Europe, for god’s sake!)
Of course there is no mention of McCain’s BS-Express and his dozens of lobbyists that ride around on the bus with him and determine his policies. And there’s no mention that the man has so many homes he can’t even remember how many there are. And no mention that he left his wife to shack up with a trophy wife with millions.
Come on Star-Tribune editors! When will you wake up and see that this woman is damaging your journalistic reputation?
Or doesn’t it matter any more?

GO zilla says:

I will watch no part of the Democrat nor the Republican convention. They are grossly insulting to one’s intelligence. They are the vertex of a long drawn out evil perpetrated upon the populace, namely, the primary campaign.

Unhappily, the worst is yet to come. The national campaign in all its depravity we still must suffer through. Then the new cycle of horror begins. The victorious malefactor is thrust upon us in all his wicked glory.

No matter who the victor is, the citizens of the populace are the incontrovertible losers. The victor is certain to be evil incarnate, the personification of evil, just like his predecessor.

Americans, being the most wicked people inhabiting this planet, probably get what they deserve. It is unfortunate that the rest of the world must also suffer the consequences of this national calamity.

Now if they continue in the article to describe him as a “former Beatle” and never mention the fact that he really wasn’t with the Beatles when they where popular.

Then the whole damn thing is a lie.

That’s what I’m trying to say about this “First Black President” thing. People or some peoples or somebody should have corrected this before it became uncorrectable.

When republicans are “infiltrating” Obama’s acceptance speech digs, it’s pretty clear the party is paranoid about it’s future.

If stories about this infiltration are true, it isn’t the first time the GOP has done so. First, there was Watergate, and second, the Ronald Reagan camp stole President Carter’s debate notes prior to the debate. (I would also condemn any similar actions by Democrats.)

However, the total lack of evidence that Cheney started the Great Chicago Fire, along with his failure to confess to the heinous crime, is just another example of this very secretive administration’s refusal to be forthcoming and honest with the American People.
SEE the connection?

“I do not know whether a crime was committed by any of the administration officials who revealed Valerie Plame’s identity to reporters,” Scott McClellan told the shocked Congressional panel while he personally signed copies of his bestselling book, What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington’s Culture of Deception.
“Nor do I know if there was an attempt by any person or persons to engage in a cover-up during the investigation. I do not think the president had any knowledge of the revelation of Valerie Plame Wilson’s identity. In terms of the vice president, I do not know.”

Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) vowed to leave no taxpayer dollar unspent to find out what else Scott McClellan doesn’t know and, if necessary, launch impeachment proceedings against Dick Cheney for any other crimes that there’s a suspicious lack of evidence he committed.

Good evening,
Just wanted to comment about how thankful I am for the freedom of speech.
I am glad I live in a country where the kind of comments above won’t cause anyone to be executed *cough cough radical Muslims* *.
I am glad that we are free to worship (and not worship) as we see fit (although I wish the government would see fit to tax these businesses as they would any other business).
I am glad we are not told how many children to have, what job we are allowed, have our food rationed to us, and many other luxuries that other places in the world do not enjoy.

I just wanted also to thank each one of you for your comments, and that I enjoy reading this blog every day not because I agree with you crazy ass neocons, but because I believe you are good people who care about our country and want to express your concerns and offer up different perspectives.

Thanks for the entertainment and discussions.

Did the belief of the almighty Bush fall victim to the squalor of deep water and septic gases of the imobile masses that languish at the bottom of the scrotum pole of life that was as it was before it could have been better because they then had at once and forever said so?

The Republicans have finally put forth a candidate who is not right wing. I never believed it possible but they have nominated a centrist. A man who votes not for his party all the time but someone who votes against his party. The Democrats have put up someone who was voted the most liberal Senator in the Senate two steps to the left of Biden and one step left of Ted Kennedy. Maybe they could bring back Mcgovern the only one I can think of that is farther left.Isn’t it funny how we are told we are all so bad off. I get a kick out of the people on this blog saying how bad the country is now. They are sitting at home in front of a $2000 computer and complaining how bad off they are. Americans wake up! We are in a great country where people have an equal opportunity. They complain about the price of gas. That must mean they own a car. I just spent 8 months in a third world country where I saw one family living a board under a tree. No roof, no water, nothing. Boy, things are really bad here. This is the greatest country in the world and that is why so many are trying to get in to America. I read one blogger earlier that said we have to change things. Why change, do you have food on the table, do you have a roof, are you sitting at a computer. If your sitting at a computer and things are so bad sell the computer and buy health insurance. Sell the computer and buy gas. Just quit whining. God Bless America.

There are many queers that I admire and respect, and I would never insult them by calling them a Democrat.

As a gay man, I can think of few more insulting things to be called than a Republican. I am a proud Democrat, although too many Democratic leaders have been spineless lately; a great disappointment.

Fellow liberals, a question; Why do you try to argue with these nutjobs? You can’t change their minds

Some of them can see reason on occasion. Once in a while a mind is changed here (including mine).

You cannot reason with the unreasonable.

Very true. But they’re not all unreasonable. Just most of them.

Stop trying.

Never! Have you no appreciation for what those who came before you in this nation have accomplished? How much would they have accomplished had they stopped trying? What kind of a country would we live in if women had stopped trying to obtain the right to vote, or if abolitionists had stopped trying to free the slaves? I will never give up fighting for what I believe in. Even here in this “little Korner of Kraziness.”

Evil Baby Fauvel says:

I get a kick out of the people on this blog saying how bad the country is now….We are in a great country where people have an equal opportunity….I read one blogger earlier that said we have to change things. Why change, do you have food on the table, do you have a roof, are you sitting at a computer….Just quit whining.

I get a kick out of people who think everyone living in the United States has it made. Equal opportunity? You’ve got to be kidding. In most states it’s legal to fire gay people just because they’re gay. Top law students of liberal persuasion didn’t have “equal opportunity” when applying for work at the Department of “Justice.” Need I go on?

Yes, people who post here must be using a computer. Are they sitting at a $2,000 computer at home? Some are. Others have to use computers located in public libraries because they can’t afford a computer of their own. They don’t necessarily have food on the table, and some don’t know if they’ll have a roof over their head tonight.

You say to “just quit whining.” Why don’t you open your eyes and ears and learn about people who are not as fortunate as you are? There are a lot of them; you won’t have a hard time finding them. Ask someone in their fifties what it’s like to be laid off with a mortgage and kids in college. Ask someone fighting cancer what it’s like to lose their health insurance because they’re too sick to work. Ask a homeless veteran with a mental illness what it’s like to serve your country with honor, only to be denied the treatment you need and deserve.

Why change? Because in this “greatest country in the world,” there is no reason that anyone should be denied health care, a meal, or a roof over his head. Yet this is the reality for far too many people, and many of them are victims of circumstances beyond their control. centrist, take off your rose-colored glasses, unplug your ears and nose and take another look around you. Some people here do not have it much better than the children living in drainpipes in Mexico (yeah, I’ve seen that, too).

universally despised village idiot, the greatest minds in the Democrat party, Carter, Kerry,
Kennedy, Reid, Pelosi, Dan Rather, et al, all put their superior minds together with the sole purpose
of getting the illiterate and incompetant, universally despised village idiot out of the White House.

Of course, we all know how that turned out.

Perhaps all the lib-rage shown by Teiresias, ttepley arises from the fact that no
rational person should ever underestimate the Democrat’s amazing ability to muck up
an election.

rip Steve Foley.

Had to google him to tell the truth, didn’t know who he was.

One of the replacement Replacements.

When I think of that band I really only consider the lineup of both Stinsons, Westerberg, and Chris Mars. Although… I like some of Slim Dunlap’s solo work.

I’ve seen a couple of Tommy Stinson’s X-mas solo shows at the Uptown.

Was too young to see a real ‘Mats show back in the day. No one would have believed the fake id even if I’d had one.

I don’t worship the band but I love some of their songs.

Insomuch as you mocked me as being a jazzophile because I once rattled off a half-dozen jazz drummers who could beat up Neil Peart and take his lunch money, well I guess so.

I like the first Hank and the most recent Hank. The middle Hank irritates me. Hey, I bet he’ll play some ditty at the Repub convention next week.

tiny,
I have repeatedly stated that I do not care if the term is “marriage” or “civil union” as long as the civil union has same rights, benefits, privileges, and responsiblities as the “marriage”. You have never agreed to that condition. (It must noted, though, that using two different terms for the same legal state implies a separate but equal status and the USSC struck down that concept in Brown v Board of Education.)

If “civil unions” do not have the same legal status as “marriages,” then the question of bigotry does indeed arise.

True, Senator Obama does not support same-sex marriage, but he does support civil unions, which Senator McCain does. In fact, Senator McCain has repeatedly cast Senatorial votes against laws that would have guaranteed equal rights for gays and lesbians and campaigned in favor of anti-gay laws in Arizona.

So, tiny, here are 2 questions for you that only require a “yes” or “no” answer.

If “civil unions” for gays and lesbians are given the same legal status as “marriages” for opposite-sex couples, would you support “civil unions”?

KK’s anti-gay marriage amendment bans not only same-sex “marriage”, but also the legal equivalent, i.e., civil unions with the same legal status. Do you or do you not support this anti-gay marriage amendment?

JonR says:

Pat Buchanan’s ananlysis of last nights speach was at the very least sincere. I think his quoteswere something like or similar to .. “this was not a typical ‘liberal’ speech - it was fantastic” “the speech was not liberal, it was centrist” .. “this is the greatest political speech I have witnessed in my lifetime” (this one isn’t verbatim but contextually it fits what he said) .. considering he’s been to all the major political/civil events in the last almost half cenury, I’m going to look past any rhetoric and agree with him. Now I know Pat hasn’t had a conversion like the rest of those clowns over there. Honestly I didn’t like what he was saying and might have been calling him names again but I trusted that was what he was really saying.

Pat Buchanan is the only honest guy on cable news. Fact stranger then fiction.

Interesting, tiny, that you call me a GW Moron, when I’ve been very clear that I don’t believe we know for sure what is causing it.

Why do you call me a moron? Because I believe in energy conservation and renewable energy? Because I believe in the scientific method? Because I understand that a cold August morning in Northern MN doesn’t mean a thing in terms of the larger picture?

Not Romney Not Pawlenty.

Bailey Hutchison?

“Pat Buchanan is the only honest guy on cable news.”

I tend to believe the same. An @nalyst, and someone who’s only bias is to see a strong country.

jcf817 we’ve been having this argument for a year. Your statement above just doesn’t jive with those you have made in the past.

Don’t back peddle on this. This is your issue. Unless you have finally figured out Scam that is.

I get this feeling he may be doing something nobody expects but not by whom he chooses - it’s how the introduction is conducted.

The ‘old’ part has to be addressed and maybe using technology is going towards that issue? Like this .. “I’m here in MN getting everything ready for the convention blah, blah, blah” on a big screen in a ‘heartland’ state fair backdrop. Hits the ‘old and out-of-touch’ as-well-as the incorporating the average man theme.

Lieberman? Ridge? Hutchison? who knows.

They are playing a good game though!

Has the Republican party moved so far to the right that Pat Buchanan is now a reasonable voice in politics? Or has Pat Buchanan changed his political views?

I don’t watch MSNBC, so I have not heard Pat Buchanan comment lately. It sounds to me like he wouldn’t be a viable candidate in today’s Republican party.

“and someone who’s only bias is to see a strong country.”

God…lets Hug Greg. Thats the phoniest bunch of BS. “Lets come together” means “vote for me”

Its Lieberman, no its not.

I thought a year ago these two should have just run together as independents with McCain at the top.

I’m fine with it but I’m a “moderate” and a new Republican. But no way can he make this choice.

I’m not backpedaling. I know where I stand and have always stood on the issue. The burden of proof is on you. Show me where I’ve said what you claim I said.

Sincerely, that’s why I’m paying attention to him. Not kumbaya by any means, but a sincere devotion to the country.

and ..

you realize that by offering the hug gig that D2 is going to attack your orientation. I mean, you’ve apparently changed the orientation of your squirells?

HA!

You need North and South Carolina
.And you need FLA. May it would help in help in Missouri/Iowa

I’d pick Lindsey Graham

The Purple Sates, The Purple states. Not how many people you get at your rallies.

“They are playing a good game though!”

The Press can create its own game. The McCain camp may have nothing to do with this.

But then again I’m looking at it from a non-extremists view point.

Think again, Kersten is missing something, again.

“Greek Temple” = Lincoln Memorial.

America’s first black candidate accepts nomination on the 45th anniversary of King’s “Dream Speech”
(which was delivered at the Lincoln memorial).

Now do you get it?

kuschnir Rove?

“But then again I’m looking at it from a non-extremists view point.”

But not a practical non-extremist. Turn to ANY major cable network and what do you see ..

Think that’s by accident?
