Hello All,
I apologize for not writing for many months. I graduated from the University of Saint Thomas in May, and began a year of service with AmeriCorps VISTA. I haven't had the time to write, because AmeriCorps VISTA is a 40-hour-per-week commitment, and I have less free time than I did in college.
I have today off from work, and I don't have a lot of time to write on the blog today, and I wanted to take the time to comment on the last two topics that Ms. Kersten has written on.
For those of you new to the blog, I'm a 23-year-old Catholic man who is a recent alumnus of the University of St. Thomas, for those of you who would like to know a bit about my background.
I agree completely with Ms. Kersten's recent column on same-sex marriage.
Marriage is a sacred union of husband and wife, given completely to each other, physically and spiritually.
At the heart of marriage is a self-sacrificial love, which God, in turn, makes fruitful, if He so chooses, with children. The self-sacrificial love of the husband and wife for each other is in turn extended to their children.
While many people have close friendships with members of their same gender, and that's a good thing, the self-sacrificial love proper to marriage, with its procreative power through conjugal acts, is reserved between a man and woman joined by God in marriage. Any sexual activity outside of marriage, be it with a person of the same gender or opposite gender, is fornication and is gravely sinful, because it's a use of the sexual faculties that's contrary to how God intended them to be used, sort of like mowing rocks with a lawn mower.
As far as health care reform is concerned, if done properly, I wholeheartedly support it. However, we must ensure that it is individuals and doctors, and not the government, that is making the decisions, and healthcare rationing is a danger of government-run healthcare that should be avoided at all costs.
Even more imperative, however, is that the Stupak Amendment, banning funding for abortions from the healthcare bill, should be kept in the final healthcare bill. I would also like to see an amendment prohibiting euthanasia and mandating that any "end-of-life counseling" may not be used to counsel someone to take their life, either through suicide or euthanasia. Life is sacred and must be protected from conception until natural death.
Along those same lines, I think that all immmigrants, legal or not, should be allowed to purchase insurance with their own money from the insurance exchanges. To fail to allow them to do that, I feel, would be wrong, because healthcare is a basic necessity, and to deny someone access to healthcare based on whether or not they are in the country legally is wrong. The parable of the Good Samaritan comes to mind.
As for today's topic, I am saddened but not surprised. Cultural diversity in the United States covers everything except European and Christian traditions, especially Catholicism, and, even though Western society was formed and nourished by Christianity for centuries, we have cut off our culture from its roots. If the foundation of our society is not restored to its rightful place, Western society will wither away. It's happened before (look at the fall of Roman civilization), and it can, and, if we're not careful, will, happen again.

Mr. Leland

I know of a place that serves root beer, crackers, and pickled fish. It is served on Fridays.

This will resolve the dilemma.

It is like the whole universe is screaming, “We are fed up with you, leland. We want nothing more to do with you.”

It may be all over for me, Mr tluck.

You do realize you're better off than several billion people.

Ms Katherine, I am sorry I went a little off topic.

I will bless you, your blog, and all of the people who post here with the Benediction from the Teutonic church:

The Lord bless you and keep you
The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.

Amen.

I am not going to predict the time and date of my death.

I predicted this several times in the past, but those predictions never came true.

In my will I have bequethed all my earthly belongings to Irv. I am doing this to get revenge. You would not believe what an SOB he is at times. I will get the last laugh. Sort of.

Mr tluck, It is incredible how with so many people in this world, one can be so alone.

I have tried to have friends, and I failed. Tried to find love, and failed. Now I am looking for a job, and can find nothing.

It is like the whole universe is screaming, "We are fed up with you, leland. We want nothing more to do with you."

It may be all over for me, Mr tluck.

This is no joke.

I think I will have to study my Amy Vanderbilt book of etiquette. Or was that Gloria Vanderbilt.

Whatever happened to "Miss Manners". I could write and ask her.

Dear Miss Manners,

Greg invited me to have root beer. I would like to have a sardine and cracker with it. Who should bring the cracker? Who should bring the sardine?

Awaiting your reply.

Sincerely,
leland

I usually never socialize, except on rare occassions with Irv. I really am uncertain of protocol.
